A Bomber is the second most powerful air-to-ground unit. It drops heavy bombs on enemies, but is vulnerable to Anti-Air Vehicles and Fighters. It is one of three units that can easily destroy Battlestations without risk, the others being the Gunship and the Strato Destroyer.
Background
A bomber is a step down from its more heavily armored and more dangerous conterpart, the Strato Destroyer, but is reliable nevertheless. Fighter escorts are vital to a bomber's survival in an area infested by fighters, and any Anti-Air vehicles are advised to be destroyed efore sending a bomber into a zone. It is often required that bombers survive in cobat, but keeping them alive in levels without that objective will make your live easier.
Involvement
Bombers are often used to destroy enemy structures and units that are indestructible otherwise. In BW the Extraction Towers, which are Nerocite extracting facilities made of a Xylvanian titanium alloy, are only destructible with air-to-fuel bombes from Frontier bombers. In BWii, the Concrete Barrier from Ice Station X and the Dreadnought from the Anglo Isles campgain are good examples. Bombers are serious threats to any battlestaions also, so they are sometimes put in missions where a battlestation is required to survive.
Strategy
Fighters, frigates, and anti-air vehicles will send a bomber to the scrap heap in few rounds. Strato destroyers are effective as well. Anti-Air Veterans can fight bombers, but are less effective as bombers can rather easily kill them, anti-air towers are fairly effective as they have a massive amount of damage reduction from any form of Aeriel attack and there is no way to avoid being damaged in their range, however they tend to be a bit slow to kill the bomber if not manned by the player. If the AA Tower is manned by a player as with all units and occupiable structures it gains a noticeable increase in Damage, Health, and if the player is smart and/or paranoid enough, significantly faster reaction time.
Of course Bombers suffer horribly if they fly above a large amount of Dreadnoughts or Battleships as their quad AA cannons do the same amount of damage per second as AA towers, and there are multiple per ship. However unless the bomber wing has suffered significant casualties the Bombers can usually take out the Ships before they are overwhelmed by flak. But if there are enough of these mighty ships casualties from non-player controlled bombers are certain. Which is why the Submarine, Artillery, Another Battleship or dreadnought is still the preferred method of dealing with the Capital ships.
Attempting to use Gunships against Bombers is a foolish thing to do as the bomber's machine guns are twice as powerful and a bomber is fast enough to hit gunships consistently with it's bombs if used by a canny enough player. Surprisingly, in the last mission of the Coral Atolls campaign in Battalion Wars called The Battle of the Coral Atolls, Kaiser Vlad orders Countess Ingrid to attack the player's Bomber with Gunships. If all else fails and/or nothing else is available, Recons, Grunts, Assault Vets, Machine gun Nests/Towers are the last effective line of defense. However all of these lack any special form of resistance to a bomber's weapons.
Trivia
- Like everything else in the Battalion Wars games, these units are based on actual aircraft. The Western bomber is based on the B-17 Flying fortress, the Tundran bomber on the Tupolev TB-3, the Anglo bomber on the AVRO Lancaster and the Xylvanian bomber on the Horten Go 229.
- The Xylvanian bomber is non-existent in Battalion Wars 2.
